About the African Union (AU)
The African Union (AU) is a continental intergovernmental organization established to promote unity, solidarity, and cooperation among African states. It was officially launched in 2002 as the successor to the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which was founded in 1963.
The AU brings together all recognized African countries and works to advance peace, security, stability, and sustainable development across the continent. Its mandate covers political, economic, social, and cultural integration, with a strong focus on good governance, human rights, conflict prevention, and post-conflict reconstruction.
Through its institutions, specialized agencies, and missions, the African Union supports member states in addressing common challenges such as security threats, humanitarian crises, economic development, climate change, and public health. The AU also plays a central role in coordinating Africa’s collective voice in global affairs and international partnerships.
